Upcoming Site Changes

Although it has changed homes a few times, the Screamsheet has been around since 2000 when I got my first domain on Geocities. The name came from the news sheets in the Cyberpunk 2020 role-playing game, and it fit my personality because I spent a lot of time screaming about nerdy things.

Now I’ve reached middle age and I don’t do as much comical ranting as I used to. So as the year draws to a close, I think I’m going to adjust a few cosmetic things about this website, including the name.

I have yet to make a final decision, but my current feeling is that in January 2026 I’ll change the title, header, and background of this website, retiring the name “The Screamsheet” and likely going with “Babbling Brooks,” since I do more babbling than screaming these days.

This is a change in name and appearance only. I don’t plan on removing any content, and I’m not going to change the WordPress template I use to organize the site–I did that once before and had to basically rebuild the whole thing.

The website address also won’t change, but I might wind up buying a domain name so screamsheet.wordpress.com isn’t the only way to get here.

The only other changes I have in mind for the new year are a possible reorganizing of the site menus so my books (which I want people to read) are easier to find and my various recurring articles like Comics & Quests or A Kind of Magic can be accessed from the home page. But again, I don’t plan to remove any actual content.

If you feel strongly that I’m making the wrong move, I’d love to hear from you. Nothing will be changed until January, so I have plenty of time to mull everything over in my head.

Site News: And We’re Back!

Welcome to 2025! Updates to the Screamsheet will resume next week, with the same diverse grab-bag of content that I usually do.

I am hoping to structure my updates a bit more formally starting in 2025. Ideally, I’m hoping for updates on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

If I stick to this format, Mondays will be a port of old content to the this site, such as my BabyCenter blogs, information on my books, and old content that I retrieve using the Internet Archive. Wednesdays will be new content, including digging through more Comics & Quests, ramblings about history and literature, and other eclectic thoughts. Fridays, I hope, will be a fiction update, either a short story or a segment of something longer akin to a serial. I tend to get more motivated to write when I’m putting stuff in front of the public, even if it is a rough draft.

If I stick to that schedule, that’s a total of about 150 updates in 2025 and a potential novel’s worth of new fiction. That seems ambitious, but there’s nothing wrong with aiming high.

Happy 2025! Here’s hoping I manage to keep my nose to the grindstone!

Site News: Happy Holidays!

Here we are, approaching the end of 2024. While there are many things I don’t like about this year, I am happy that I’ve found a routing of regular updates to the Screamsheet after several inconsistent years.

I’m going to take a bit of a winter hibernation for a couple weeks, returning in early January. I plan to keep site updates to the Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule I’ve established, and am hoping to make Fridays a day for new fiction, posting some rough drafts of new stories.

Whatever you celebrate, enjoy some happy holidays and have a great new year. I’ll see you in 2025!

Site News: Parenting Section Incoming

You might have noticed a Parenting page among the topics in this site’s header. That’s because I have several blog entries that I wrote with BabyCenter.com which I plan to archive here. Being a “Dad Blogger” for BabyCenter was a rewarding job that I happily did for several years before the site restructured its blogs. I remain proud of the experiences and insights I shared there, and I’m happy to bring them back for those who might want to read them.

The Screamsheet is largely devoted to nerdy pop culture topics, so slipping parenting advice in there might seem off-topic. However, this site is meant to show off my personality and the things I find interesting, and there is nothing more interesting than being a parent.

Other content won’t be going away, so there will be plenty of nerdy ramblings from me in the future. But I hope you enjoy seeing this other side of me as well.

Plans for the Future

Although it has moved web addresses here and there, the Screamsheet has been my online home for 24 years. It started as a creative outlet during the darkest period of my life and evolved into a sprawling blog, complete with a fair number of offensive and immature rants that thankfully have been sent into the abyss of deletion.

Regardless of what the site has been or how frequently I update it, this place serves an important role in my life. It’s an opportunity for me to embrace my passions, document where I’ve been, and share my life with people.

One thing it has not been for some time is a place where I can advertise my fiction and gaming writing. For some time, I have relegated ChBrooks.com as the place where I announce new publications. Back when I started that site, it was necessary because my rantings at the Screamsheet were not something I wanted associated with my writing life.

Time and maturity have smoothed out some of my rough spots, however, and I’m weighing the cost and benefits of having another site. If it goes the way I’m thinking, I might wind down ChBrooks.com over the coming months and shift content over here. That would mean an influx of fiction and occasional announcements when I have a new publication coming out.

Writing is a major part of my life, and since the Screamsheet is a reflection of who I am, it probably makes sense to folds those two worlds together again. Nothing is set in stone yet, but don’t be surprised if you find some short stories popping up now and again amidst my rantings about old comics and movies.
